La La Land Question Thingymabob
Discuss how important cinematography is in establishing strong responses from spectators to a key character in La La Land - must refer to a scene!
In the scene "what could have been" We see the shot pan out on Seb and the lighting brightens and we see the background to be the restaurant from Mia and Sebs first encounter. The shot then cuts to a smiling Mia centre screen in the blue dress she originally wore in that scene making it clear that this is a flashback or Mia's imagination changing how they went about things for a happy ending. The fact that she is the only thing visible makes it easier for the audience to identify that this is replicating that scene which makes it easier for the passive audience members which a low budget independent film wouldn't. Then we see an over the shoulder shot where we see Mia observing what we have already seen when Seb loses his job but makes us feel more connected to Mia as both Mia and us the spectators are working out that this has already happened. We then see a quick close up of Mia with shocked facial expressions cutting to a forwards tracking shot of Mia walking towards Seb foreshadowing that this will end differently to be for as she is moving to him with the intention of talking to him this time. She then mumbles something in a close up shot and then it cuts to them having a romantic kiss in a tracking shot rotating around them with a steady cam which makes it seem more like a fantasy then a realistic ending because this is an unusual shot and the positive non-diegetic music from earlier which enhances this feeling of a classic fairytale happy ending vibe.
The verisimilitude completely disappears in this scene when the camera pans in and out and to the right of the shot there is two people who start clicking their fingers to the diegetic music followed by 2 more on the opposite side as the camera pans back in and when a steady cam forward foly tracks them to the boss of Seb who before we saw as a mean originally has his arms crossed and an annoyed facial expression standing in the way of Mia and Seb. The camera is placed symmetrically in between Seb and Mia and the boss is right in the middle of the shot, this makes it seem even more unrealistic as eveything is perfect whereas in a film with more verisimilitude the shots would be more shaky and UN even as the audience can relate to it but this enhances the idea this is Mias imagination or a dream. The mean boss also smiles and starts joining in with the dancing as he lets Mia and Seb past which enhances this idea that this scene is make belief as well as his personality has sarcastically changed in second. We then see a match on action shot as we see Seb and Mia exit through the doors if the restaurant and then the next shot is them walking through the doors of their new house. This is one long tracking shot and as camera pans in on a picture of hands playing a piano citing to a shot of Seb playing a piano. These match on action shots are done to make it seem more fluid and continuous and perfect enhancing this fantasy make belief idea to give hints to the more passive audience members so they can understand.
The whole idea of the movie is based around Hollywood and dreams coming true in Hollywood for struggling actors and performers so this film like fantasy perfect feel enhances the idea this is fake and a dream or imagination as most people struggling to make their dreams come true in Hollywood usually end up failing and being unsuccessful. And that links to the title of this scene which is what could have been as this is what most people struggling to make their dreams come true will always think when they have to make the choices effecting their jobs, friends and family and this is what Now is experiencing and the more times you watch this scene the more you understand this and many people can relate to this if not being struggling performers, struggling to 've their dreams and this is where we really feel for Miami and understand and this scene may just be the best and most important in the film as it teaches the lesson that in order for your dreams to come true you have to lose something else.
